Named after William Pope Duval, Governor of the Florida Territory in the early 1800s, Duval is the 7th most populous county in Florida. Jacksonville is Duval County’s seat, however it also includes Jacksonville, Atlantic, and Neptune Beaches as well as the town of Baldwin. The county has a rich history from indigenous tribes to the French colony of Fort Caroline to the European settlement of Cowford, which later became Jacksonville.
